Sammartini, Guiseppe
back to previous selection
Giuseppe Sammartini (1695–1750) was an Italian composer and oboist who was one of the leading figures of the late Baroque period. In his day, he was considered one of the best oboists. As a composer, Sammartini wrote an extensive repertoire, including concertos and sonatas for oboe, flute, and recorder, chamber music, and piano concertos. His music is notable for its melodic inventiveness, delicate rhythms, and lyrical lines, as well as its structure and gallant style, which in many ways foreshadows the arrival of the early classical period. His compositions remain popular among performers of Baroque music and recorder players to this day.
