Arban, Jean Baptiste

back to previous selection
Joseph Jean-Baptiste Laurent Arban (1825-1889) was a trumpeter, conductor, composer, and teacher whose name is still inextricably linked with the teaching of brass instruments. Arban is best known as the author of the educational work Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet (Cornet), now known simply as the Arban Method. This comprehensive method book remains the basis for trumpet and cornet instruction around the world and has also been adapted for other brass instruments. It is characterized by an emphasis on technical precision, breath control, tone culture, and expression. In addition to methodical études, Arban composed a number of brilliant pieces, primarily for cornet, including the famous variations on "Carnival in Venice," which have become an iconic repertoire for competitions and concert performances. Jean-Baptiste Arban's systematic approach, emphasis on musical beauty, and technical perfection have influenced generations of players and teachers. His legacy lives on—not only through his method books, but also through his teaching style, which laid the foundations for modern brass pedagogy.
