Karel Kryl (1944 – 1994) was a Czech poet and songwriter, the main representative of the Czechoslovak anti-communist protest song in the years 1963–1989. Many of his songs became popular and became symbols of the fight against totalitarian power. He wrote his own music and lyrics, his repertoire included both satirical and serious songs, reflecting on society, as well as poetic or melancholic ballads. He is nicknamed "the poet with a guitar".
