Product description
The Brook Green Suite is one of Gustav Holst's last orchestral works and has long been a favourite in the string orchestra repertoire. The suite consists of three movements, the energetic Prelude, the lyrical Air and the lively Dance, in which the influence of English folklore can be heard. Later the piece was supplemented by Holst himself with four optional woodwind parts (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon). The composition is remarkable for its simplicity, melodic lightness and delicate orchestration, and it is a testament to Holst's mastery that even after nearly ninety years it remains a popular and valued part of the orchestral literature.
Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was a British composer, conductor and teacher whose work is characterised by an original combination of impressionism and English folklore. His best-known work is the suite The Planets, which captivated listeners with its unique musical images of the individual planets of the solar system. His style is characterized by rhythmic variety, unusual harmonic techniques, and an emphasis on orchestral color. Holst left a deep mark on the history of British music and inspired generations of composers. In addition to composing, he was also a music educator and a major influence on the development of music education in the UK.
