This one-movement work for oboe, bassoon and piano was written by Petr Eben in 1970 on commission from the Swedish agency Rikskonsenetr for an author's tour of Sweden. The compostition has a concert character with a spectacular instrumental stylisation. The piece is written mostly atonal, and here and there there are bits of purely tonal melody taken from Gregorian chant.
Petr Eben (1929-2007) was a Czech composer of sacred, modern and contemporary classical music. His extensive compositional works cover almost all genres and has penetrated the repertoire of many performers, chamber ensembles and orchestras. He has also worked as a piano accompanist and organist.
